Phuket Local Markets

Local Markets in Phuket
Markets in Thailand are some of the very best and most interesting places to observe ordinary Thai people going about their everyday business of shopping for food and other items. The markets are always a hive of activity where all kinds of people rub shoulders, and the most popular ones inevitably attract people from miles around, both for shopping and to sell their fresh produce. Markets are considered by many to play a key and very important part in daily Thai society, probably much more so than in western countries. One advantage and reason they are so popular is that you can find many goods selling far cheaper than at the more modern supermarkets and department stores.

For a slice of the real Thailand, you can do much worse than spend an hour or two at a local market, even if you are not really intending to buy anything. Once you see what’s on offer, you just might be tempted to sample some fresh exotic fruit or enjoy a snack at one of the many food stalls. At the very least, it will provide you with some great photo opportunities and a welcome insight into life in Thailand away from the bars and beaches. Most of the Thai cooking classes in Phuket also take you to the markets to buy fresh produce under the guidance of the chef or class tutor.
Many Thai people as well as farang (foreigners) make full use of markets in Thai cities, not just the large ones in Bangkok and Phuket. Most of the smaller towns and provinces all over the country have their own local markets. Ask any expat or local resident in Phuket and they will tell you that they often shop for groceries at a market, especially anyone that owns a local restaurant or food business. For the low prices and sheer variety of products on offer, it’s hard to beat local markets in Phuket and you can choose between many different vendors.
As a foreigner, if you don’t understand any Thai then the smaller markets out in the provinces might appear a little bewildering at first, but it’s easy enough just to point and indicate which items you want. In Phuket, many of the locals speak at least some basic English, and that certainly makes life a little easier when shopping. Make sure that you have enough small denomination change and coins at the ready though, as the vendors are likely to be rather annoyed if you buy 20 baht’s worth of limes and try to pay with a 1000 baht note! You may find that you attract some unusual looks and smiles from the stallholders as you walk through a local market in Phuket, especially in the smaller ones where fewer foreigners tend to visit. Thais are friendly and usually appreciate the fact that you are shopping the local way, which makes it very easy to strike up a conversation with almost anybody when wandering around.

In contrast to western markets, in Thailand there are all sorts of strange things happening that might surprise you. For example, it’s quite common to see small motorbikes speeding down the isles delivering goods or huge baskets of ice balanced precariously on the back. However after you’ve been in Phuket for a while, you start to accept such things as normal! In all indoor markets, the floors tend to be very wet and slippery, and the outside markets can be downright muddy especially in the rainy season. Hence it’s a good idea to wear something a little more sturdy than just flip-flops when visiting a Thai market. You might also have trouble parking nearby especially at peak times, when you might be forced to park a few blocks down the street and walk.

Fresh and Appointment Markets
Markets in Thailand come in several varieties. The first type is known as a Talat Sot or Fresh Market. They usually open every day in the same location and tend to stock mostly fresh food items, but not always exclusively. Sometimes, it’s possible to pick up a range of other goods in the talat sot markets besides food, even though this is the predominant type of items on sale. These days, many markets are housed in permanent structures with decent roofs and well built stalls, with adequate space to walk between the isles. Older ones are often much more cramped and you’ll be elbowing, hustling and bustling your way eagerly past other shoppers to find what you’re after.
The second type of local market in Thailand is the Talat Nat or Appointment Market. These normally take place on several days or nights every week, and the traders travel from all over the surrounding area to sell their fresh produce, quite often straight from the farms themselves. The sellers might also travel between markets on different days of the week. Almost every town and village in Thailand has a variety of each type of market, with some specialising in certain types of produce such as household goods, electronics and clothing, or just fruit and vegetables.
If you stay in Phuket for any length of time you’ll soon come to know the items that each  market specialises in, and which are the most enjoyable simply for browsing or for an interesting few hours. For example it’s quite entertaining just to walk around the night markets perusing all the different stalls, or make an evening of it by having a meal at one of the many food outlets. For Thai people going to the market with a group of friends can often be all part of a good night out.
Due to it’s size, Phuket has a very wide selection of all types of market in many different locations. Unsurprisingly, Phuket Town probably has the largest concentration of markets but most of the smaller districts have regular ones too, so you won’t have to go far to find what you need.

Deliciously Fresh Food
When you visit a Thai fresh food market, the colourful sights and amazing smells will strike you almost immediately. Huge piles of exotic looking fruit (such as the pungent durian and weird looking dragon fruit), vegetables, herbs and spices, many of which you may never have come across before, nestle next to stands selling meat, fish and fresh seafood, all laid out temptingly on beds of ice. Since Phuket is an island particularly renowned for its delicious seafood, you can expect to sea rather exotic looking fish, fresh squid, prawns, various types of sea shells, lobsters and much more besides. Items of similar type are usually located close to each other in the same area but it’s not unusual to find a fruit stall situated right next to a clothes stall. Besides the wide variety of fresh food on sale, there are usually at least a couple of stalls inside the permanent markets selling cooked foods such as curries, deep fried chicken or noodle soup.

The Markets in Phuket
Some of the main markets found throughout Phuket are mentioned below. There are so many that it’s impossible to list them all, but when exploring the island you’ll no doubt come across a few small or interesting ones that have a wide selection of goods. Locals buzz around the markets all day, coming to-and-fro on small motorbikes laden with goods.

 Banzaan Fresh Market (Patong Beach)
Just over the road from the Jungceylon shopping mall, Banzaan is a large covered fresh food market that has a decent selection of meats, fruit and vegetables. It’s located almost immediately opposite the Thai Boxing stadium which is round the back of Soi San Sabai in central Patong.
Open: every day between 9am and 7pm

Beach Road Night Market (Patong Beach)

Although not really considered a market in the normal sense, but there are countless small stalls along the beach road and the adjacent side streets, the majority of which sell all kinds of souvenirs and clothes firmly aimed at tourists. Common items include T-shirts, handbags, shoes, souvenirs, jewellery, Thai arts and crafts, as well as thousands of pirated movies and games. Many items are counterfeit so just check the quality of what you are buying before you pay, and don’t necessarily expect to be able to get a refund later on. The stalls tend to open most of the day, and remain open in the evenings to catch the continuous passing trade of tourists.

Patong Fresh Market / Mae Ubol (Patong Beach)
This fresh fruit, vegetable, meat and fish market is also colloquially known as the Nanai Road Fresh Market due to its location in the eastern side of Patong Beach on the back north-south road. Upstairs, there is a whole floor housing a rather large Andaman seashell and souvenir collection. There are dozens of rows of Thai souvenirs, trinkets and some rather attractive sea shells meticulously laid out. However, there was nobody there when we visited but the displays and objects themselves are quite attractive. Out the front, there are a selection of newly built beer bars and a couple of popular restaurants.
Open: every day from 8am to 8pm

Kathu Market
Located almost halfway between Phuket Town and Patong Beach, Kathu is home to a very popular and large market aimed squarely at the locals. Thankfully, you won’t find stalls selling overpriced tourist tat and useless souvenirs, but instead there are huge amounts of fresh food, clothing and such. It’s a fabulous place to obtain fresh meat, fish and vegetables. Just like many markets in Thailand, countless stalls set up shop outside selling delicious Thai snacks and takeaway meals.
Open: every day

Downtown Market (Phuket Town)
The oldest market in Phuket is located in Phuket Town on Ranong Road. It’s one of the best fresh fruit and vegetable markets and opens extremely early in the morning between 3am and 9am so you need to be early if you want to visit. The very freshest foods are sold here and come direct from the local farms, so many Phuket restaurants shop at this time to get the best produce. There’s a small extension to the market on the other side of the road selling fresh fruit and vegetables throughout the day.
Open: every day

Expo Market (Phuket Town)
Also known as Phuket Square Market, the expo market mainly sells furniture, clothes and other household items. It’s one of the best places on the island to find cheap clothes. Open between 10am until late, it’s located on Tilok-U-Thit Road.
Open: every day

Kaset Market (Phuket Town)
Talat Kaset is near the main Robinson’s store in Phuket Town, and sells the usual fresh produce such as meat, vegetables and fish. In the evenings you can find cooked foods, drinks and Thai desserts.
Open: every day between 6am and 9am, and early evenings

Weekend Market, or Talat Thai Rot (Phuket Town)
This is by far the biggest market in Phuket and opens on Saturdays and Sundays only from mid afternoon until late at night. It’s very close to Central Festival and so is extremely easy to find. Some people call it JJ Market (Jatujak or Chatuchak) just like the famous Bangkok equivalent, and since it’s not isn’t primarily aimed at tourists you won’t find the same selection of fake T-shirts and souvenirs on sale, but there are delicious fresh foods, cheap clothes, countless accessories and much more to be found. It’s certainly well worth a look and you can find a massive range of products at great prices. For a tasty and different snack, try the fresh deep fried crickets at only 10 baht for a cupful! “A-roi”, as they say in Thailand…
Open: weekends only

Rawai Seafood Market
Near the pier by the Chao Lay gypsy village in Rawai is a very small local market selling fresh fish, shell fish and seafood. It’s not something that you’d go out of your way to visit, but it’s definitely worth a look if you’re in the area. There are also a couple of good restaurants adjacent to the market and it’s a good spot to people-watch.
Open: daily, mid afternoon until evening

Phuket Town Nightlife

Nightlife in Phuket Town
Phuket has a well-earned and justified reputation for its wild and exuberant nightlife, especially the overt adult entertainment that is available just about everywhere. This is most prevalent in the countless beer and go-go bars, massage parlours, as well as offered by the thousands of freelance working girls in the bars and clubs. Especially when compared with European countries, the nightlife in Phuket could be considered quite wild.
The main hub of the debauchery in Phuket is undoubtedly Patong Beach, but Phuket Town (which has had city status for some time even though many people continue to use the old name) is a welcome departure from the clichéd excesses of crowded Patong. The surprisingly small provincial capital can be a rewarding place to spend an alternative and enjoyable night out, besides the numerous events and festivals that justify its claim to be the cultural capital of Phuket. The unique and historic architecture in the heart of old town coupled with the more relaxed atmosphere, are a welcome breath of fresh air and make you realise that there is much more to the island than you might think.
The Thai Way…

Nightlife in Phuket Town is relatively tame by Patong Beach standards and you won’t find hordes of tourists or many adult thrill seekers, mainly due to its more remote location away from the main tourist hotspots. This contributes in no small part to its charm and its essentially Thai character, and anybody that hasn’t yet experienced an authentic Thai pub or disco is strongly recommended to give it a go at least once. The main attraction are the big music pubs and clubs, which tend to have a live band and hundreds of young people. Dance floors are virtually non-existent as Thais prefer to cluster with friends around small tables, but there is usually adequate room to strut your stuff if you like dancing. Unlike most Western countries, clubs in Thailand don’t normally charge an entrance fee and the dress code is normally very casual.
You might be surprised at just how much fun it can be to listen to cheesy Asian pop music and mingle with real Thai people. Many Thai pubs and clubs are quite kitsch and the décor can be tacky. It’s also perfectly acceptable and common in Thailand to take your own bottles of spirits and buy only the mixers in the bar, which might seem like a strange practice to westerners. Dozens of venues in Phuket Town provide table service and the waiters (or quite often very attractive female hosts) are very attentive. There are also a few karaoke and coyote joints that have dance shows, catering mainly to Asian men but foreigners are also welcome. In many late night venues, it’s possible to find company for the night, but remember that most women in Phuket Town’s bars are not bar girls, and are more likely there just to enjoy themselves without getting hassled by overzealous tourists.

Bars, Clubs and Live Music in Phuket Town
Here is a brief description of some of the most popular bars, pubs and clubs scattered around Phuket Town. You might come across even more venues when exploring the town, but since everything is spread out you’ll need transport to get around. It’s certainly not possible to do a traditional pub crawl by foot here. Most venues in Phuket Town play live music of some kind, mainly Thai rock, folk and pop.

Aeuk-Ka-Nok
This large Thai oriented pub and club has a sign written in Thai only (pronounced correctly as Aeuk-Ka-Nok) but is easily recognised by the massive Johnnie Walker sign outside and is more usually referred to as the Johnnie Walker pub too. It’s a busy venue and a regular house band plays nightly. Not many foreigners frequent this place, so if you don’t want to be noticed then try somewhere else.
Open: 19.30-01.00, daily
Address: Chana Charoen Road

Barzah Fun Club
This Thai nightspot hosts coyote and dance shows with special events such as Back To School and Supermodel parties. As you can imagine, the emphasis is on the bikini-clad hotties prancing about and so there is normally quite a large male crowd. They also have air-con and rooms available in case you want to organise some “extras” with a new friend. It’s located in a slightly dodgy part of town so make sure you don’t walk there alone.
Address: Phun Phon Road
Tel: +66 (0) 84 768 0234

Blue Marina Pub
Always one of the most popular venues in Phuket Town, Blue Marina Pub features regular live bands, and DJ’s between sets playing excessively loud music. There are sometimes very well known bands performing, which attracts a mixed clientele of Thais and foreigners. On the weekends there is a flood of university students and it gets so busy that you can’t move, so it’s recommended to arrive early. There is no entrance fee and the drinks prices are quite reasonable.
Open: 22.00-02.00, daily
Address: 158/1 Yaowarat Road
Tel: +66 (0) 76 212 866

Bossy Bar
A friendly place that has some attractive girls serving drinks and chatting with the customers. There is not much out of the ordinary here but it can be good fun, especially if you go with a few Thai friends.
Open: 20.00-04.00, daily
Address: Next to the Phuket bus station

Buddy Café
One of the more popular Thai places where sexy women sing and dance onstage to entertain the enthusiastic men. If you really appreciate their efforts you can buy them a flower garland which they exchange for cash. They’ll happily sit with customers for the price of a few drinks. You can also buy food to enjoy between the entertaining and stimulating shows. What more could you want?
Open: 20.00-02.00, daily
Address: Soi Nimit, Chana Charoen Road

Chit Lom
This is the kind of place to go when you want to party until very late and everywhere else is already closed. Inside, it’s all stylish black décor, and there is decent live music (typically rock and folk songs). As common in Thai clubs there are dozens of tables to stand at, as well as a pool table and outdoor comfy chairs. They also serve food.
Open: 18.00-late, daily
Web: Chidlom Phuket Bar (Facebook)

Chivas
This air-conditioned venue on Ratsada Road was formerly called 9 Richter, and remains a lively spot with trendy Thais. Sometimes two bands play Thai rock and pop to the delight of the crowd, which normally includes a few foreigners as well as locals. There’s also a variety of DJ’s that crank up the volume, so don’t expect much in the way of conversation here. Most of the clientele drink bottles of whiskey and mixers, rather than beer.
Open: 09.00-02.00, daily
Address: Ratsada Road
Tel: +66 (0) 76 340 409

Fantasia
Fantasia is quite an upmarket and plush entertainment venue with a large main hall, that is almost solely frequented by affluent Thai and Asian customers. The drinks are certainly not cheap but the stage shows that feature beautiful girls and atmospheric lighting are surprisingly well choreographed and enjoyable, and most of the women are more attractive than found in many of Patong’s bars. There are of course some exceptional coyote and erotic dance routines, but also some cultural and even traditional performances. Fantasia also hosts live music and special one off concerts, such as the legendary Bangkok Thai band Micro who have played here in the past.
Open: 20.00-02.00, daily
Address: Corner of Montri Road
Tel: +66 (0) 87 274 9393
Web: Fantasia Phuket (Facebook)

Fever Corner
Fever Corner is a chilled out open air beer garden that seems to attract the locals. It definitely helps if you can speak some Thai and you must be over 20 years old to enter (though as a westerner you will rarely be asked). The atmosphere is relaxed and there is plenty of seating. A good choice for a laid back evening.
Address: Takua-Pa Road, Talat Yai

Glasnost
This little backstreet place in the delightful Soi Romanee is owned by a lawyer that just happens to be wild about jazz music. It’s cosy and unique, with many interesting and unusual ornaments from around the world adoring the walls. For anybody that wishes to indulge in a jam session there are loads of instruments available such as drums, bongos, guitars, keyboards and microphones. One of the most well known haunts in Phuket Town and a great venue for impromptu music, fun and laughter. If the host himself is in town, you’re sure to have a good time.
Open: 10.00-midnight, daily
Address: 14 Soi Romannee
Tel: +66 (0) 76 258 332

Ka Jok See
If you’re looking for an atmospheric and romantic spot for a quiet dinner, then look no further than Ka Jok See. During the daytime and early evening it’s a fabulous and well known restaurant with an attractive old wooden interior and interesting Thai arts and crafts. Later in the night once all the tables have been emptied, it changes character completely and turns into a lively dance venue with exceptional music and frolicking.
Open: 18.00-01.00, Tuesday-Sunday
Address: Takua Pa Road
Tel: +66 (0) 76 217 903

Kor Tor Mor

This trendy, upmarket nightspot is a very well known nightspot in Phuket Town, popular with locals, tourists and expats alike. On weekends it’s so rammed that you might be better off going during the week instead. Do as the Thais do and take your own bottle of whiskey, grab a table and enjoy the music and diverse mix of people in the crowd. Just don’t wear shorts and sandals as you won’t be allowed in…
Open: 22.00-02.00, daily
Address: Chana Charoen Road
Tel: +66 (0) 76 232 285

Jammin’ Music Club
This music club is a firm favourite with the young and hip locals. Jammin’ was the original Caribbean reggae club in Phuket Town but nowadays the live bands seem to play a wider range of music including rock, pop and even jazz.
Open: 20.00-02.00, daily
Address: 78/28 Bangkok Road
Tel: +66 (0) 76 220 189
Email:
jammin@vol.net

Michael’s Bar
This friendly bar is really an expat and backpacker hangout. They have all the expected ingredients such as a pool table, a TV and free Internet access, as well as a daily happy hour between 4pm and 7pm (all beers are just 60 baht). It’s a cool place to hang out and enjoy live sport, as well as meet other travellers and resident expats. They must be doing something right as they’ve been going strong for more than 12 years.
Open: 16.00-01.00, daily
Address: 12 Takua-Pa Road
Tel: +66 (0) 76 256 562

Music Matter
This little open-sided laid back venue is tucked away in a lane that runs between Phuket Road and Tilok-U-Thit 1 Road, so isn’t very well known to that many people. Nevertheless, Music Matter (sic) has quite an avid following amongst Phuket’s jazz aficionados and cocktail lovers, and every Wednesday talented musicians gather for a jazz session. The bar is owned by local musician Jeffrey Sevilla who always manages to pull in a dedicated crowd of expats and locals. On busy nights, the customers spill over into the street.
Address: Between Phuket Road and Tilok-U-Thit 1 Road
Web: Musik Matters Phuket (Facebook)

O’Malleys
It seems like every town has an Irish bar, and Phuket Town is no exception. This is a laid back lounge style bar with comfy chairs and plenty of space, as well as a pool table, TV’s and various bar games such as Jenga. It’s a good spot to hang out and drink Guinness (or cider) especially early in the evening before moving on to one of the music clubs. You can expect to rub shoulders with expats and travellers, and a live band sometimes plays. Food and especially the breakfasts are top notch. There is even an inexpenisve hostel on the premises.
Open: 16.00-01.00, daily
Address: 2/20-21 Montri Road, Phuket Town
Tel: +66 (0) 81 246 4481

Rockin’ Angels Jammin’ Cafe
In high season this small music bar can become very lively. The attraction is the live music (which is mainly rock and blues) and the atmosphere is friendly and fun. Posters and interesting memorabilia of music legends such as John Lennon adorn the walls, and the beers are cheap. You’re likely to bump into a few local Thais and expats hanging out at Rockin’ Angels.
Open: 17.00-01.00, daily
Address: 54 Yaowarat Road
Tel: +66 (0) 89 654 9654

Rom Dee
Another tiny watering hole in Yaowarat Road, which probably has the highest number of little bars and music venues in town. Rom Dee is simple and inexpensive with a couple of tables and occasionally live music, so it’s popular with the locals and is quite a pleasant, unassuming spot. Nothing fancy but worth a look, this bar it’s the perfect antidote to the brash and noisy clubs and bars. The trendy Sanaeha bar is just next door.
Address: Yaowarat Road

Roxy Bar
Roxy has proven to be a winning formula with local residents since it opened in 2007. The atmosphere is friendly and the food is superb (Mexican, Western and authentic Turkish food is available). Prices are reasonable and with the combination of live TV sports, pool competitions, Wednesday quiz nights and a DJ on Fridays, Roxy has become a local hotspot. Happy hour runs until 8pm when all bottled beers are priced at just 50 baht.
Open: 16.00-01.00, daily
Address: 50 Phang Nga Road
Tel: +66 (0) 81 397 0033
Web:
www.roxybarphuket.com

Sanaeha
Justifiably one of the busiest and most trendy bars in Phuket Town, and even more so since a recent renovation. Inside it’s now moody black and blue with chandeliers and classy furniture. The chic décor, pleasantly relaxed ambience and hip crowd help to make this among the best places to be seen in town. Buy a bottle of whiskey with mixers and enjoy the live bands that play several nights a week.
Address: Yaowarat Road

Sofa Disco and Pub
This huge place is an extremely busy dance club with live music. Set on several levels, it’s usually packed on weekends when the vibe is very energetic. Be warned that like many such places, the music can be so loud there’s not much chance for any conversation, but it’s a great place to catch the best local bands.
Address: New Dibuk Road

Timber Rock
Previously known as Timber Hut, this is an ever-popular and famous hangout on Yaowarat Road that draws local Thais and expats alike, who come mainly for the awesome live music played by very talented house and guest bands. Timber Rock is packed every night and is probably one of the most entertaining venues in Phuket Town. Definitely a recommended nightspot during any visit to Phuket Town.
Open: 18.00-02.00, daily
Address: 118/1 Yaowarat Road

Come to celebrate the Year of the Dragon in Phuket. You'll find celebrations and cultural events across the island especially in the heart of Phuket’s Old Town and at local Chinese Shrines. This year’s main event will be at Sanam Chai Park opposite the governor’s office in Phuket Town, starting at 16:00. The Dragon is the fifth sign of the Chinese Zodiac, which consists of 12 animal signs. • Wat Chalong Fair
    Date: January 23 – 29, 2012
Location: Wat Chalong on Chaofa West Road
Wat Chalong (or Chalong Temple) Fair is probably the biggest of all temple fairs on the island. It was first started in 1933 by local farmers who lived near and around Wat Chalong. After a long period of hard work and when the harvest was complete, they would get together and create a kind of fun fair on the temple’s grounds. In later years, they set up the fair during the Chinese New Year because they wanted to make sure that Thais with Chinese heritage would join in, too. The fair lasts seven days each year and is a colourful, crowded, aromatic, noisy but fascinating spectacle. Claustrophobic people stay away…
  • Old Phuket Festival
    Date: January 28 - 30, 2012
Venue: The Heart of Phuket Town

    Tel: +66 (0) 76-212 213
This year’s event will be the 13th anniversary of the popular Old Phuket Town Festival which is held in collaboration with the Chinese New Year. The festival is held at the heart of the Old Town on Thalang, Krabi, and Phuket Roads and along the famous Soi Rommanee. Thalang Road and Soi Rommanee will be converted into walking streets during the festival. Expect many colourful entertainment options including a Phuket Baba Light Show, a rickshaw tour around the streets, cultural parades, Chinese opera performances, Chinese folk dancing troupes and more. The activities start from about 15:00 and last until midnight each day. If coming by car, please make sure to park away from the centre as things get extremely congested, traffic wise.
February 2012
  • The Bay Regatta
    Date: February 1 - 5, 2012

    Website:

The provinces of Phuket, Phang Nga and Krabi will provide the backdrop to The Bay Regatta (formerly the Phang Nga Bay Regatta), one of the world’s most scenic sailing events, from February 1 – 5. Showcasing some of the most stunning maritime scenery in the world – beaches, limestone karsts and cliffs – the Regatta takes racers on a tour of the bay and, as an extra bonus, offers a fun-filled time off the water – fantastic parties and camaraderie – for the 40 to 50 yachts in attendance. Now in its 15th year, the Regatta is unique amongst Thailand sailing events. More information, please email bayregatta@acyc-phuket.com
  • Phuket International Blues Rock Festival
    Date: February 24 – 25, 2012
    Venue: Laguna Phuket
Contact: Andy Andersen Tel: 086-682 2639
Who says Phuket lacks good musical events? Check out the annual Blues and Rock Festival. Starting in 2005, the Phuket International Blues Festival has gained both popularity and fans over the years. The festival grows bigger in terms of the number of artists that rock the stage as well as in audience numbers every year.  The main artists for 2012 included Chris Thomas King, who has sold more records and appeared in more successful films than any other blues artist this century. A singer and guitarist on the now classic ‘O Brother, Where Art Thou’ soundtrack, King found crossover fame as a successful actor in the Coen Brothers movie opposite George Clooney.
Other newcomers will be from USA, UK and Asia in addition to returning acts Rich Harper (USA), John Meyer (Australia) and AkashA (Malaysia), all returning by popular demand. Local Phuket-based acts will also appear as in the past. It will be another glorious weekend of blues and rock ’n’ roll under the stars!

The festival features bicycle racing, a takraw (volleyball played with the feet) tournament, tug-o’-war, a mini-marathon as well as an uppasombot moo (Buddhist ordination) ceremony. The highlight of the festival is a spectacular historical show about the history of Phuket. The open-air play with a cast of 700 actors runs three nights, starting at 19:00 at the Thalang Victory Memorial Field.
The event caters mainly for locals but foreign visitors are encouraged to go along. The organizers invite nearby hotels to bring their guests to this free-entrance festival but an interpreter might be necessary to help you appreciate it better. Some are quite unique and rare that even new-generation Thais might never have experienced them before. Such activities include Thai boxing’s wai kru ceremony (a demonstration of respect and gratitude of boxers to their teachers), a sword dancing show, shadow puppet shows and traditional lullaby singing. Lots of local cuisine and ‘OTOP’ products (such as batik, silk and wooden decorative items) are on display and for sale at the fair, too.

November 2012
  • Loy Kratong FestivalDate: November 28, 2011

A festival of quiet celebration, the origins of Loy Kratong are unclear, but it is believed that it started in Sukhothai, (north of Bangkok) one of the most powerful cities in Asia, around 800 years ago. On this particular night, on nearly every expanse of water, be it a river, lake or the ocean, you'll notice thousands of lights drifting across the water like fairy dreams.
Gently flickering, dipping and dancing in the breeze as they go, they make a spectacular sight. All of Phuket's major west coast beaches take part in Loy Kratong festivities, with a mix of locals and tourists. Nai Harn (on the large lake) and Patong usually have the most activity with locals visiting beaches like Kata and Karon.
